About Owed, and where every figure comes from

Owed is a free triage tool. It asks a few plain questions and tells you which UK benefits and discounts are worth checking for your situation, with the official link. That is all it does.

What it is not

It is not a benefits calculator and does not tell you what you will get. Amounts depend on your exact circumstances. For a full calculation use entitledto or Turn2us, or get free help from Citizens Advice.

The entitlements we triage, and their sources

Pension Credit

Tops up the weekly income of people over State Pension age, and unlocks other help (housing costs, council tax, a free TV licence at 75, the Warm Home Discount).

Attendance Allowance

A tax-free payment for people over State Pension age who need help or supervision because of a condition. Not affected by income or savings.

Carer's Allowance

A weekly payment if you care at least 35 hours a week for someone on a disability benefit. If you earn just over the limit, Carer's Credit still protects your pension record.

Council Tax Reduction

A reduction on your council tax bill if you are on a low income or certain benefits. Each council runs its own scheme.

Single-person council tax discount

A 25 percent discount on your council tax if you are the only adult in your home. It is not automatic, you have to apply.

Marriage Allowance

Lets a lower-earning spouse or civil partner transfer part of their tax-free allowance to a basic-rate-taxpayer partner, cutting the couple's tax.

Child Benefit

A payment for each child you are responsible for. Worth claiming even if a high earner repays some, because it protects your State Pension record and secures your child's National Insurance number.

Free school meals

Free lunches for eligible pupils, which also triggers extra pupil-premium funding for the school. From September 2026 all children in Universal Credit households in England qualify.

Healthy Start

A prepaid card for milk, fruit, vegetables, pulses and infant formula, plus free vitamins, if you are pregnant or have a young child and on a qualifying benefit.

Broadband and water social tariffs

Cheaper broadband and capped or reduced water bills for people on means-tested benefits, offered by most providers. You apply directly with your provider.

Warm Home Discount

A one-off rebate off your winter electricity bill for people on means-tested benefits. In England and Wales the cost-to-heat test was removed, so more households now qualify, mostly automatically.

Housing support for pensioners

Help with rent for people over State Pension age on a low income, through Pension Credit or Housing Benefit. Unlike working-age renters (who use Universal Credit), pensioners can still make new Housing Benefit claims.

Bereavement Support Payment

Tax-free support if your husband, wife or civil partner has died and you are under State Pension age. There is a tight window: claim within 3 months for the full amount, and the lump sum is lost after 12 months.
